Gulls readily adapt to flat commercial rooftops as nesting sites, particularly near waterfronts and areas with accessible food waste. During nesting season they can become bold and territorial, swooping at people who approach too closely to a nest or chicks.
Because gulls are protected under migratory bird regulations in many jurisdictions, nest and egg removal must be handled carefully and often requires permits. Preventive deterrents installed before nesting begins, such as wire systems or decoys, are generally the most practical long-term solution.
