Woodpeckers peck at wood siding, trim, and cedar shakes for several reasons — foraging for insects hiding beneath the surface, excavating a nesting cavity, or drumming loudly to mark territory and attract a mate, especially in spring. Homes with wood siding or trim resembling a dead tree are particularly appealing targets.
Repeated pecking in the same spot can eventually create real structural damage and provide an entry point for insects and moisture. Because woodpeckers are protected, exclusion methods like netting, reflective deterrents, or repairing and treating the wood to make it less appealing are the recommended approach rather than removal.
