Mosquitoes require standing water to complete their life cycle, laying eggs in anything from clogged eavestroughs and bird baths to old tires and drainage ditches. Populations typically spike within one to two weeks of a heavy rainfall as eggs hatch and develop into biting adults.
Beyond the itch of a bite, mosquitoes are a public health concern as a vector for viruses transmitted through their bites. Eliminating standing water around the property, maintaining screens, and scheduling seasonal yard treatments during peak months are the most effective ways to reduce exposure.
