Chipmunks are small, striped rodents best known for their extensive burrow systems, which can run several metres and include multiple entrances near patios, retaining walls, and building foundations. They stockpile seeds and nuts in these burrows to sustain themselves through their winter dormancy.
While generally harmless to people, their burrowing can undermine patio stones, walkways, and foundation edges over time if a colony becomes established. Removing easy food sources like open bird feeders and sealing gaps around porches and steps helps discourage burrowing close to the home.
