Norway rats are strong burrowers, often digging nests along foundations, under sheds, and in yards, especially near reliable food sources like garbage, bird feeders, or compost. They are excellent swimmers and climbers, and readily move indoors through gaps in foundations, sewer connections, and utility penetrations.
Beyond the property damage caused by gnawing and burrowing, Norway rats can carry pathogens transmissible to people and pets. A property-wide inspection to identify burrows and entry points, paired with exclusion and monitored bait stations, is the standard approach to lasting control.
