Groundhogs, also known as woodchucks, dig extensive burrow systems with multiple entrances, often positioned under sheds, decks, or along garden beds and fence lines. A single burrow system can undermine the stability of nearby structures and hardscaping over time.
They are also enthusiastic grazers, and a resident groundhog can quickly damage vegetable gardens and ornamental plantings through the growing season. Fencing buried at least 30 cm underground around garden areas is one of the more effective deterrents alongside professional removal and burrow exclusion.
