Raccoons are intelligent, strong climbers capable of tearing open roof vents, damaging soffits, and prying up loose shingles to access attics and chimneys for denning, particularly when raising young in spring. They are also notorious for getting into garbage bins and gardens in search of food.
Beyond structural damage, raccoons can carry parasites and diseases transmissible to pets and people, and a cornered or defending raccoon can become aggressive. Because raising young may be involved, humane removal timed correctly and followed by exclusion work is best handled by a licensed wildlife control professional.
